In radio, what you hear when you tune in, the actual broadcast, represents only about ten percent of the total operation. If you think of Upward Path Radio as an iceberg, the other 90% of what will make it a success depends entirely on what happens to the rest of the iceberg. As you will notice, these volunteer opportunities all fall under the category of "behind-the-scenes" or "below the surface" if the iceberg metaphor works better for you.  While we realize that many of you are interested in hosting shows or being on air in some fashion, the most successful community radio stations are the ones whose hosts ALSO all take on support roles that help keep the iceberg afloat!
 

Take a look at these Volunteer Opportunities and then respond to the prompts below. Please don't worry if you don't consider yourself "an expert" in any of these categories.  We'll gladly work with you based on your abilities and availability.  We'll of course be thrilled if you have a ton of knowledge you could share with the rest of us, but it's really your energy and enthusiasm for community and radio that we are looking for! We will be pairing you up with teams of people who will be able to help you out!

ADMINISTRATIVE - "I'm interested in helping out behind the scenes with some of the often unsung but essential tasks to ensure that the station is running smoothly, such as scheduling meetings, managing our email list and newsletters, coordinating other volunteers, and overseeing projects."
 

WEB DESIGN/SOFTWARE - "I am comfortable with software and online platforms. know how to write code and build web pages/online platforms and could help build features for the website such as an online archive of recent programming. I could help troubleshoot technical problems that might arise."
 

EVENT PLANNING - “I am connected to a lot of local organizations and have knowledge of events in the community that would make for good live broadcasts.  I am familiar and comfortable with the logistics of event planning and can pull together different groups through clear communication leading up to the day of the event."  
 

FUNDRAISING & DEVELOPMENT - "I would like to help organize events and campaigns to raise money and other kinds of donations for UPR. I have some experience in seeking out and communicating directly with prospective donors, and I'm interested in helping the station explore generating revenue through local underwriting and/or advertising."
 

GRAPHIC DESIGN/BRANDING - "I have a strong aesthetic sense/artistic design capabilities and digital graphic design skills.  I am confident in my ability to communicate a message through visuals and accompanying text in creative, energetic, and impactful ways. I am familiar with branding/marketing and can help make sure these components of the station are consistent across all channels."
 

LEGAL SUPPORT - "I have a legal background and could contribute to Upward Path Radio by advising on legal matters specifically as they pertain to LLCs, non-profits, and organizations with 501c 3 status.  I am willing to learn and advise Upward Path Radio on legal issues around royalties and licensing and community radio in general."
 

PROGRAMMING & CONTENT - “I am interested in working with the outreach team to continually diversify UPR's on-air content by seeking out new ideas from new voices throughout Montclair and the surrounding community. I'd help vet and keep track of inquiries from community members who contact us about producing original programming or repackaging existing audio content."
 

OUTREACH & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - "I would help forge relationships with community groups and businesses around town. I am skilled with social media across various platforms and have experience writing press releases and communicating with local news and advertising outlets where UPR could promote events and station updates.  I would work very closely with the graphic/web design and event planning teams."
 

AUDIO/PRODUCTION - "I have some experience in audio/radio/podcasting/music production, and I could help set up a basic sound recording for live outdoor/indoor events as well as studio/home recording.  I could also assist with recording a wide range of audio from live music to one-on-one interviews to tape gathering around town. I know how to edit audio and could help clean up problematic sound people send us, re-save files to the proper format, and package them into segments that are ready for broadcast.  I could also assist with the creation and production of station IDs and promos and/or jingles."
 

JOURNALISM/NEWS - "I have a lot of interest in local news stories and am comfortable interviewing local people and researching/telling local stories of interest in audio narrative/narrative storytelling style." Think "An audio version of the Montclair Local or perhaps extensions and deeper content dives into stories and op-eds that appear in the Local or other hyper local news media outlets." I am interested in working in the local news department or hosting some sort of news related show at Upward Path Radio!

Is there a second category with which you're also interested in helping us? Or do you have any other specific interests, skills, experience, or connections that you think might be helpful or relevant?  Like maybe you're involved in the commercial real estate world and would like to help us find a physical location for our studios. Perhaps you know something about architecture or construction and want to help us build a sound booth once we have a permanent space.  Or you're skilled in photography or video production and think those talents might come in handy.  Whatever it is, please let us know what you have in mind, and we'll see if there's a way we can fit you in!
